Java Room went out of their way, partitioning off an entire section of the coffee bar for Iris' party. Kate and the delivery boys from Idamae's arrived, and Lyssa, who co-owned Java Room, took it upon herself to not only accept the deliveries, but decorate. Long swaths of tangerine and crimson material hung from the ceiling and huge, tasseled pillows adorned the private room. Glowing candles, patchouli incense, and oranges completed the ambiance. The darkened room evoked a Moroccan flair.

The birthday girl looked somewhere between stunning and cute as can be with her giant toe bow. After all the guests arrived, the food began to be served by a couple of freshman grunts Nina hired. Iris sat between Zoe and Nina with Sal at the far end. Amazed he even had the balls to show up, he may have been her Dom-in-practice, but it seemed to be in title alone. Iris watched him that evening, flirting with the girls and continuing to avoid her, making it ever so apparent of his intent.

Iris could feign a happy face for the sake of the beautiful party her friend threw, but the truth remained, she ached inside with a pain so deep it consumed everything. For better or worse, Sal provided an ability to numb the past if he didn’t cause the heartache of the present.

As the dinner continued, Iris’ depressed state worsened. By the time the plates cleared, she sighed—ready to go home and hide under her covers—and wish the memories of her past birthdays away. Last year, Chance had taken her for a romantic dinner, brought her home, and made love to her. She recounted the intricacies of that very tryst as it was the day they called him asking him if he would be interested in a six-month assignment.

Chance whispered, “Just one more.”

Quietly, tears ran down her cheek as he moved inside of her. She wanted him whole. She wanted him happy. Though dangerous and lucrative, part of his happiness resided in his career. They knew the risks. She knew them all too well. And he had no idea how she suffered during the six times he departed.

Chance promised, “It's lucky number seven; it will be my last one.”

Neither of them knew Iris’ twenty-sixth birthday would be their last one together. The last birthday she would ever make a wish with him watching her blow her candles out. Suddenly, tears rushed to her eyes. Muttering an excuse to Nina, Iris hobbled off to the bathroom as fast as she could, unnoticed except by one—Sal.

Wedging herself into the tiny stall, Iris slid down the door to the floor, straddling the toilet with one leg on either side. Every imaginable question entered her mind, from why she didn't ask Chance not go – to – what in the hell she was doing at someplace like Juliet. She wanted to go home, their home, back in Chicago. Hysterically crying, Iris heard someone come in. Reaching underneath the stall door, a hand grabbed hers, squeezing it tight.
